For a long time, patients have faced a familiar trade-off when choosing a hearing aid: go with a discreet, nearly invisible style and sacrifice features, or choose a more capable device that is harder to conceal. Oticon's newest hearing aid, the Oticon Zeal, challenges that trade-off directly — and we're pleased to offer it here at Evanston Audiology.

What Makes Oticon Zeal Different?

Oticon Zeal is an in-the-ear hearing aid that sits deep in the ear canal, making it nearly invisible to others. What sets it apart from previous in-canal styles is that it doesn't ask you to give anything up to get that discreet fit.

It is powered by Oticon's Sirius chip — the same platform behind the Oticon Intent — and includes second-generation Deep Neural Network (DNN 2.0) sound processing. This AI-driven technology works continuously in the background, helping to separate speech from background noise and giving your brain access to a full, balanced sound scene. Oticon refers to this as BrainHearing technology, which is built on the idea that we hear with our brains, not just our ears.

A New Approach to Manufacturing

One of the more interesting aspects of the Zeal is how it's built. Oticon developed a new encapsulation process where the internal components are sealed inside a solid protective material, with no hollow spaces inside the device. This makes the Zeal highly resistant to moisture and debris, earning it an IP68 rating.

This approach also made it possible to fit a rechargeable lithium-ion battery inside a device this size — something that has traditionally been very difficult with in-canal styles. The Zeal delivers up to 20 hours of battery life on a single charge, with a quick-charge option that provides 4 hours of use from just 15 minutes of charging.

Connectivity in a Small Package

Bluetooth connectivity in a device this small is another shift from what in-canal hearing aids have traditionally offered. Oticon Zeal streams audio directly from both iOS and Android devices, supports hands-free calling, and is compatible with Auracast — a newer Bluetooth technology that allows users to tap into audio broadcasts in public spaces like theaters or airports.

The device uses a wrap-around antenna cord that also serves as a retention arm and removal cord. It's designed to make contact with the skin of the ear, which helps maintain a stable wireless connection throughout the day.

Fitting Flexibility

Oticon Zeal can be fit the same day using standard domes — the same domes used for the Oticon Intent — which means patients don't have to wait for a custom mold to get started. For those who prefer or need a more customized fit, micro molds are also available.

Oticon reports a good dome fit in approximately two out of three people, with a fitting range suited to mild through moderately severe hearing loss. Custom micro molds can extend the fitting range further for some patients.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

When you come in to explore the Oticon Zeal, we take a thorough approach to the fitting process. We use Real Ear Measurement (REM) to verify that your hearing aids are delivering the right level of sound for your specific hearing profile. This step is often skipped at other practices, but we consider it a standard part of how we fit hearing aids here.

Getting the programming right matters just as much as the technology inside the device. A hearing aid that isn't properly fit to your individual hearing loss won't perform the way it should, regardless of how advanced it is.

Schedule a Consultation at Evanston Audiology

If you've been putting off addressing your hearing loss partly out of concern about wearing a visible hearing aid, the Oticon Zeal may be worth a closer look. And if you're simply looking for a well-performing, rechargeable hearing aid with modern connectivity, it's a strong option in that regard too.

We'd be happy to walk you through how the Zeal compares to other options we carry and help you decide if it's the right fit for your hearing needs and lifestyle. Call us at 847-869-9433 or visit us at 1811 Benson Ave, Evanston, IL to schedule an appointment.
